Food businesses – setting one up

There have been media reports about an increase in people selling food made at home on social media. While you may want to share your new recipes, domestic kitchens are not normally suitable for commercial activities and safe food production. Anyone selling food must show food safety skills and knowledge and their business must be part of an inspection scheme. If you want to set up a food business you need to discuss this with your local council or State or Territory health department who can help with advice, including any notification requirements such as licensing or registration. Please contact the Environmental Health Officer at your local council (see your local phone book), or your State or Territory Health Department

You can also contact a food safety consultant for a fee via the Australian Institute of Food Science and Technology’s website.

Consumers should only purchase food from licensed or registered vendors.
